About Me
I am Dr. Luis Garza, a Portuguese visual artist and researcher of Iberic and Sephardic Jewish descent. Educated in Denmark, Sweden, Japan, and Mexico, my unique background and diverse cultural influences have shaped my journey from a childhood immersed in the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C., to my adulthood all around the world. From the most rural experiences living in San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas with the Tzeltal people, or being a volunteer teacher in the Zapotec highlands of Oaxaca, to studying and working for architecture firms in Copenhagen, studying Renaissance art in Florence, or creating art sculptures in Paris and Lyon, this has led me to an international career in art and visual anthropology. Here, you will discover my ceramic works inspired by Scandinavian, Japanese, and Native American mythology, as well as my essays and publications on art, Japanese entertainment media, and mythology in entertainment. Journey with me and enjoy this artistic and cultural adventure!
Bem-vindo! | ברוך הבא!
"Ceramics is the union of the elements: earth, water, fire, and air, transformed by the human hand into art."
— Proverb from the Moche Culture (Peru)
About My Ceramic Sculptures
My ceramic sculptures are crafted from desert clay and fired at high temperatures, glazed with a combination of industrial and natural minerals. I have been creating these pieces since I was 16 years old, under the guidance of my esteemed teacher, the sculptor Gerardo Azcúnaga. He taught us that the clay should speak for itself, and that the glazes should follow their natural character.
My inspiration comes from Scandinavian mythology, Native American folklore, and Japanese culture—all cultures I admire and love. These cultures are deeply connected to the elements, the spiritual world, and the raw expression of the human condition. They are both tragically comedic and fascinating.
As a result, my works often depict elemental beings or spirits with organic textures but postmodern expressions inspired by Japanese anime and manga, as well as pre-Columbian ceramic styles.
The Creatures
""I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieves my illness is to keep creating art."
— Yayoi Kusama
About My Mixed Media Compositions
The mixed media compositions I create are the product of my need to express myself when I am unable to work with ceramics. Unlike my sculptures, these compositions often depict my personal dramas, desires, nightmares, circumstances, and anxieties. For me, they serve as a diary that reveals much about my current situation. Because I travel so much, I make these compositions with whatever materials I have on hand, varying in technique, aesthetics, and intention. These compositions are 100% my spontaneous side that, out of necessity, needs to be expressed to get out of my head.

Motivations
“…What I seek is the union of the spiritual world with the mundane world. For me, art is a reminiscence of how an idea can manifest and come to life with the most primordial elements. The congruence of essences is the balance of the ethereal and the material, and that is what drives me to create art…”
About My Research Practice
As a Doctor, I specialize in the classification and analysis of art and design, as well as the study of Western and Eastern entertainment media, linking the past with the present. My thesis was strongly tied to the study of mythology and fairy tales in entertainment media.

My Publications
As a traveler, researcher, and visual artist, throughout my professional practice, a fundamental part of my development has been reflecting on the phenomena, issues, art, and history of the places I visit, as well as the circumstances we face. Therefore, as a researcher, publishing is a crucial aspect of contributing to science, as well as documenting my findings and reflections through other mediums such as books, magazines, and articles. Here, you can see some of my most recent publications.
